For the first time in its 16-year history, the Spanish language will be part of the statewide Utah Book Award ceremony!
For the past three years, Utah Humanities Book Festival has hosted our Sor Juana Prize for original poetry in Spanish. This year, we will present our winners and prizes as part of the Utah Book Award ceremony during the Utah Humanities Book Festival! Join us to learn about Juana Inés de la Cruz (Mexico, 1651-95), one of the most celebrated poets of the Spanish language, and to experience this year's prize winners, Utah high school students, reading their poems and receiving their awards. Free event, all ages welcome.
This year's winning poems and poets:
“Recuerdos,” Maricruz Castro, Park City High School
“Frida Kahlo,” Saul Valdez, Treasure Mountain Middle School
"La nieve cae como ceniza," Sophie Valeika, North Davis Preparatory School
"El verano," Megan Shaw, North Davis Preparatory School
Honorable mention: "Mi papá," Alan Marquez, North Davis Preparatory School
The Utah Book Award was established by the Salt Lake City Public Library to honor exceptional achievements by Utah writers and to recognize outstanding literature written with a Utah theme or setting. The Utah Humanities Book Festival is a month-long, state-wide event celebrating books, writers and readers. http://www.utahhumanities.org/index.php/Center-for-the-Book/book-festival.html
